Bed-Stuy’s Summer “Playstreets” Series

July 2012

For those into urban gardening and general community events in Bed-Stuy, it may be of no surprise that the Hattie Carthan Community Garden is one of the best educational and cultural community centers in Brooklyn. Since 1991, Hattie Carthan has provided 45 plots to local residents and acted as a gathering space to share skills, food, and improve our physical, economic, and mental well-being. What you may not know is that every Saturday during the summer, they have a market selling foods, crafts, and other locally grown and made products.
However this season, they have outdone themselves and turned the weekends into amazing communityEVENTS called “Playstreets.” A free party every Saturday from 9:00AM – 3:00PM, Playstreet offers continuous...

Growing Communities from the Ground Up

Yonnette Fleming July 2012

As a woman farmer of color, it was clear to me that some of us had to take the initiative to begin working with our youth to heal the rift. I also began to think about what it means to be charged with an inevitable “green” future that one was not given the skills required to function within...

Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market Starts Season with Voluntreer Drive and New Programs

July 2012

Beyond the hustle and bustle of the Fort Greene strip, located on Marcy and Clifton Street lies one of Bed-Stuy’s gems. The Hattie Carthan Farmers Market, now in their fourth season, is back with its objective to continue to educate the community and instill healthy eating, food preparation and shopping habits. What may appear to be just fruits and veggies growing from the ground is essentially the hard work and cultivation of the community and the market’s teenage volunteers who dedicate their efforts to spreading the word to residents of the origin of their foods through the garden and market.
